Five Generations of Enslaved FamilyThis searchable database includes over 6500 records on legal documents on  Enslaved Africans and Descendants.  The time period covered is 1700 through 1899. There are summaries of legal documents dating to 1723,

The following documents are in the database: 

Administrative Orders and Guidances 48 
Law Case 6742 
Expert Materials
Law Review or Secondary Sources  17
Legislation (Proposed and Enacted)
Regulation (Proposed and Enacted)
Trial Court Document
Trial Court Order 75 

 Documents were gathered through a Westlaw database search using the following search terms: 

  ((African or black or negro or colored)  in the same sentence with (slave or slavery or enslaved  or descendant)

  The documents were not reviewed and may only be tangentially related to the topic. 

This database has two visible pages  - list of all records (initially) or records that meet the condition (upon search), and detailed view of the selected record. When you click on any record in the list,  a detailed report will be returned for the selected record. Each record includes, at a minimum, title, citation, and 1 to 4 excerpts that illustrate the search result. Some records include summaries.
